Confidence in Testosterone Prescribing

Testosterone is a key hormone in women, yet its role in clinical practice is often under-recognised and underutilised. While traditionally associated with male physiology, testosterone plays an important role in female health, influencing sexual desire, cognition, mood, energy and overall wellbeing.

What this module covers:

Understanding Testosterone in Women – In women, testosterone is produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands and in the brain. Learners will explore the physiological role of testosterone and why symptoms of deficiency extend well beyond low libido alone, with many women presenting with cognitive difficulties, reduced confidence, fatigue and loss of motivation, even when estrogen replacement has been optimised.
Recognising the Clinical Picture – Through consultation-based learning featuring experienced clinicians working in hormone health every day, this module builds skills in recognising clinical presentations associated with low testosterone, including cognitive and mood symptoms and identifying when testosterone should be considered in patients already established on hormone treatment.
Interpreting and Prescribing – Learners will gain confidence interpreting testosterone blood tests, including total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and free androgen index (FAI), and in prescribing safely within the female physiological range. The module addresses off-licence prescribing directly, equipping clinicians to explain this clearly and confidently to patients through open communication and shared decision making.
Individualised, Evidence-Based Care – While testosterone prescribing for women remains off licence in the UK, there are clear benefits for symptoms and long-term health. This module emphasises careful monitoring, adjusting treatment based on symptoms and blood results, and applying an individualised approach throughout.
Expert Guidance – Led by Newson Education co-founder, GP and hormone specialist Dr Rebecca Lewis, with mock consultations led by specialist clinicians to build confidence in tailoring patient advice.
